SEO Best Practices for Google Ranking in 2026

Technical SEO, E-E-A-T and AI overviews in 2026, and how we structure a search programme. We publish no ranking position, traffic figure or click-through rate.

AI overviews changed how results are presented. Here is how we think about technical SEO, topical depth and measurement for 2026.

This post used to state that we had built "90+ city-service landing pages" and that they "consistently rank". The page count was wrong — the real number is 135, and this site's own sitemap disproves the figure we published. We also have no ranking data we can attribute to any of them. Both claims have been corrected rather than re-estimated. What follows is how we approach search work, not a record of results.

Technical SEO Foundations

Core Web Vitals, mobile-first indexing and crawlability are the baseline. Beyond those: structured data on the page types that support it (Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization), canonicalisation that stays consistent across international variants, and internal linking that is deliberate rather than incidental.

E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness are criteria Google publishes in its Search Quality Rater Guidelines. They describe what human raters are asked to assess — they are not a dial you can set. Clear authorship, a stated publishing history, and content that shows first-hand knowledge are reasonable responses to them.

AI Overviews

AI overviews compress the result page and cite sources. Our working view is that the things which make a page quotable are the things which make it citable:

That is our expectation, not a result we can source.

Content Structure

A pillar page supported by focused articles on its sub-questions, linked deliberately in both directions, is the structure we use. We do not publish a target article count — the right number is however many distinct questions the topic actually contains.

What We Would Stop Doing

Local and Programmatic Pages

For a business with a genuine presence in several places, local and programmatic landing pages are worth building. We maintain 135 city and service landing pages on this site. We are not publishing how they perform, because we do not yet have search data we could attribute honestly.

Measurement

Track impressions and clicks by intent cluster rather than by position alone. Watch branded search as a signal of whether anyone is looking for you by name. And connect organic sessions to enquiries rather than stopping at traffic.

What this post does not claim

We publish no ranking position, no traffic figure, no click-through rate and no conversion rate. We cite no case study and name no client. The statements about how Google evaluates pages are drawn from Google's own published Search Quality Rater Guidelines and its public documentation on AI overviews; where we go beyond what those documents state, we have labelled it as our working view. We do not publish prices; cost is quoted against a defined scope after a discovery conversation.
